Dr. Johnson has twenty years of experience as an administrator, coach, educator, and mentor. Dr. Johnson’s interest is in working with students to ensure they have an accessible and equitable educational experience. He currently serves as the Director of Multicultural Student Affairs at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, GA but has been a higher education administrator for over thirteen years. In his role, he is responsible for developing cultural, educational, and social justice programs to foster experiences that will improve the student experience.
In his previous roles as a Community College Athletic Director and Coach, he honed his mentoring skills by using sports to teach life lessons to the students he worked with. He helped both Delaware County Community College (PA) and Lehigh Carbon Community College (PA) reach unprecedented heights on the athletic field while also contributing to or leading recruiting, retention, and DEI efforts. Before these administrative roles, Dr. Johnson was a K-12 Health and Physical Education Teacher and Sports Director of a YMCA.
As a coach, Dr. Johnson has coached various sports at the community, secondary school, and collegiate levels. Most significantly was his seventeen-year stint as an assistant coach for the Widener University Women’s Basketball team, where he was integral in building the program into a national competitor. The team reached its peak in 2013 when it advanced to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Division III Elite 8.
Dr. Johnson is a lifelong learner; as a first-generation student, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education (Sports Administration) from Lock Haven University. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy. Finally, in 2021, he earned his doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pittsburgh. His research focused on what supports and hinders Black and Latinx students at Community Colleges.
Personally, Dr. Johnson is the husband of his college sweetheart Ildiko Benoit-Johnson and the father of three beautiful children, Alaina, Savana, and Ace.
